Españoles en Hollywood

Spaniards in Hollywood is a series of films selected by the film historian Román Gubern that show the influence of Spanish filmmakers in the mecca of cinema. The films are a historic journey through a century (with particular focus on the twenties and thirties). They bring to life the work of some of its most famous actors and actresses (Antonio Moreno, Raquel Meller, Catalina Bárcena), as well as the novelists who inspired the Hollywood scripts (Blasco Ibáñez, Jardiel Poncela).
FEB 1st  Film Screening: Drácula, by George Melford (USA 1931, 102 min.) In Spanish with English subtitles.

En los inicios del cine sonoro era común que los estudios hollywoodienses rehiciesen versiones de sus propias producciones en otros idiomas (normalmente en francés, español y alemán), usando el mismo vestuario, localizaciones… Muchas de esas películas no se han conservado, excepto la versión española de “Drácula” hecha por George Melford y que fue rodada por las noches de manera simultánea a la película original. En los últimos años, esta versión ha sido incluso más apreciada que la original, y sus admiradores la consideran más lograda a nivel artístico.
In the early days of sound, it was common for Hollywood studios to produce Hollywood foreign-language versions of their films (usually in French, Spanish and German) using the same sets, costumes... Unfortunately, most of these foreign language versions no longer exist. The Spanish version of Dracula is an exception. It was made by George Melford, who simultaneously filmed the movie using the same sets at night. In recent years this version's supporters consider it to be much more artistically effective.
FEB 8th  Film Screening: Mamá, by Benito Perojo (USA 1931, 80 min). In Spanish.

Santiago y Mercedes son un matrimonio de la alta burguesía. Ella es frívola, egoísta y despreocupada con respecto a sus hijos. Como consecuencia de una deuda de juego se ve en el compromiso, por no acudir a su marido, de solicitar dinero prestado al galán Alfonso de Heredia, haciéndole creer que tendrá una recompensa carnal. El hijo de ambos, conocedor de la situación, le pide un cheque al padre, pero él se da cuenta de la verdadera finalidad y piensa que es Mercedes quien ha urdido el plan. Entonces se lo echa en cara y le ordena no volver a acercarse a los hijos. A partir de ese momento Mercedes comienza a ser consciente de su condición de madre y esposa.
Santiago and Mercedes are an upper middle-class married couple. She is frivolous, selfish, and uncaring when it comes to their children .As a result of a gambling debt, she gets herself into a situation, because she does want to go to her husband, where she has to seek a loan from the heartthrob Alfonso de Heredia, leading him to believe that the payment will be sexual. Their son, knowing the situation, asks the father for a check, but he realizes the true purpose for the money and decides it is Mercedes who has hatched the plan. He throws the accusation in her face and orders her never to come near their children again. After this, Mercedes begins to realize her position as a mother and a wife.
FEB 15th  Film Screening: La Gitana Blanca (The White Gipsy), de Ricardo de Baños (España 1923, 74 min.)

Versión reducida y con nuevo montaje de una primera producción de la Royal Film de Barcelona, titulada Los arlequines de seda y oro (1919). La fama obtenida por la protagonista, Raquel Meller, como cantante de cuplés en el París de los años posteriores a la Primera guerra mundial, debió influir en los responsables de la Royal Films para, reutilizando materiales de aquel film, lanzar al mercado una película distinta. Esta versión mantenía el argumento de la primera, que narraba el romance entre una gitana y un torero, nutriéndose de los tópicos españoles de estos tipos humanos.
A shortened version and re-edit of the first production of the Royal Films of Barcelona, titled Los arlequines de seda y oro (1919). The fame achieved by the star, Raquel Meller, as a popular singer in Paris in the years following the World War I must have influenced those in charge at Royal Films to recycle materials from the original film and release a different movie. This version keeps the original main plot, which chronicled the romance between a gypsy and a bullfighter, drawing on Spanish topics typical of such characters.
FEB 22nd  Film Screening: La tierra de todos (The Temptress), by Fred Niblo (USA 1926) Silent Movie with Spanish subtitles.

Basada en una novela del español Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (Sangre y arena), La tierra de todos fue el segundo largometraje de Greta Garbo en Hollywood y el film que estableció su personalidad magnética como una vampiresa que destruye la vida de aquellos hombres que no pueden ni quieren resistir sus encantos. La actriz encarna a una marquesa que, luego de algunos escándalos amorosos, decide afincarse en la Argentina, donde conoce a un joven arquitecto que caerá rendido ante sus encantos.
Based on a novel by the Spaniard Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (Sangre y arena), La tierra de todos was Greta Garbo’s second film in Hollywood and the one that established her magnetic character as a vampire who destroys the lives of those men who do not care to resist her charms. The actress plays a marquise who after some romantic scandals decides to settle in Argentina, where she meets a young architect who'll fall under her charm.
MAR 7th Film Screening: Angelina o el honor de un brigadier, by Louis King (USA 1935). In Spanish.
Cast: Rosita Díaz Gimeno, José Crespo, Enrique de Rosas, Julio Peña, Rina de Liguoro, Juan Torena, Andrés de Segurola
Angelina, hija de Don Marcial, el brigadier, se escapa con Germán el día de su petición de mano. Su padre y Rodolfo, el novio abandonado, les persiguen. Don Marcial se debate en duelo con Germán y le hiere, y se da cuenta entonces de que su mujer, Marcela, le estaba engañando también con el mismo galante. El brigadier ve manchado su honor y decide tomar medidas drásticas.
Angelina, daughter of Don Marcial, a brigadier, escapes with Germán on the day of her engagement. Her father and Rodolfo, the abandoned fiancé, follow after them. Don Marcial challenges Germán to a duel and wounds him, after which he realizes that his wife, Marcela, was also cheating with the young man. The brigadier’s honor sullied, he decides to take drastic measures.
