The day is named after Leopold Bloom, the central character in the novel, which follows his life and thoughts from eight o’clock on 16 June 1904 through to the early hours of the following morning.
This year sees three very special events taking place here in Spain to celebrate the day, one in Barcelona on Saturday, 13 June, another in Bilbao on Tuesday 16 June and one in Madrid, also on Tuesday, 16 June.
Joycean aficionados in Barcelona have been planning an interesting line up of events to celebrate the day in La Casa de la Paraula. They will be showing a film, and will have readings accompanied by some wonderful music.
As very year, Lagun CARA Bilbao (the Irish Basque Association) will join in the celebrations with readings in English, Spanish and Euskara around the streets of the city, and encourage you to wear a white shirt/blouse and a straw hat!
And last but not least, the Bloomsday Society in Madrid, which have been meeting throughout the year to read extracts from Ulysses, have been very busy organising a special evening full of readings and song to celebrate Bloomsday. They will be joined by members of the English-speaking theatre group, the Madrid Players, who will delight the audience with their performances. You are most welcome to attend in costume.

Como muchos de vosotros sabréis, el 16 de junio se celebra en Irlanda y en muchos lugares del mundo Bloomsday, el día en el que transcurre la famosa novela de James Joyce, Ulises.
El día toma el nombre de Leopold Bloom, el personaje central de la novela, siguiendo su vida y sus pensamiento desde las 8 de la mañana del 16 de junio 1904 hasta la madrugada del día siguiente.
Este año habrá tres eventos muy especiales para celebrar el día aquí en España: uno en Barcelona el sábado 13 de junio, otro en Bilbao el martes 16 de junio, y otro en Madrid también el martes 16 de junio.
Los aficionados a Joyce en Barcelona han programado toda una serie de eventos para celebrar el día en La Casa de la Paraula. Se proyectará una película, y habrá lecturas acompañadas de buena música.
Como todos los años, Lagun CARA Bilbao (la Asociación Vasco Irlandesa) se une a las celebraciones con lecturas en inglés, español y eusquera por las calles de la ciudad. ¡Se anima a los participantes a llevar camisa/blusa blanca y sombrero de paja!
Y por último, la Sociedad Bloomsday de Madrid, que se reúne a menudo durante todo el año para leer extractos del Ulises, ha organizado una velada especial repleta de lecturas y canciones para celebrar el día. También participarán miembros del grupo de teatro The Madrid Players, que deleitarán a los asistentes con sus actuaciones. ¡Y si venís disfrazados……mejor todavía!
