Talk: “Sources, exposure and risks associated with e-waste”

Electronic waste (e-waste) refers to consumer and business electronic equipment that are near or at the end of its useful life. It applies to computers, televisions, stereos, copiers, and fax machines, among other electronic products. Although many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled to reduce the volume that goes to disposal, most electronic discards are often inappropriately treated. It is reported that two thirds of electrical and electronic waste in the European Union go to landfills and to sub-standard treatment sites in or outside the European Union. Inadequately treated e-waste poses environmental and health risks.
In this conference, several aspects related to e-waste will be presented and discussed. The generation of e-waste from different countries will permit to have an overview of the magnitude of the problem. Global managing the e-waste is a new challenge and a difficulty that has to be resolved considering social, political, economical, environmental and health viewpoints. Modern electronics can contain up to 60 different elements, ranging from metals, flame retardants, plastic and glass, among others; many are valuable, some are hazardous and some are both. Recycling techniques will be briefly discussed, according to European or other legislations which define the conditions and terms for electronic waste disposal and treatment. On the other side, the uncontrolled discarding or inappropriate waste management/recycling generates significant hazardous emissions, with severe impacts on health and environment. First, primary emissions or compounds able to migrate of leach from electronic waste will be identified. Also, secondary and tertiary toxic emissions will be discussed in terms of compounds generated during the treatment of e-waste. Depending on the physico-chemical properties of these compounds, some can leach to water or adsorb to soil or sediment, while more volatile compounds are emitted to atmosphere. The effects they may cause to the environment will be highlighted. Finally, health risks associated with the improper handling of these materials will be discussed, since in most cases, there is a lack of knowledge on the effects metals and organic compounds associated to e-waste can cause to humans, especially, to infants.

Workshop: “Olive oil”

Synopsis: Olive oil, classified by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity in November 2010, is an essential ingredient of the Mediterranean diet and, according to recent research possesses beneficial properties to our health, such as the prevention and fight against breast cancer, among other diseases. This workshop will try to raise awareness of nutritional values, the scientific studies on health claims and the cultural heritage of Spanish olive oil. As part of the activity, there will be a presentation of the organoleptic properties of oil and its uses in gastronomy that will culminate with a tasting of several varieties of Spanish extra virgin olive oil.
Biographies: Javier Delgado Lista, doctor and professor of the Department of Medicine, ORK – Dermatology of the UCO, is also an expert and researcher at the Lipid and Atherosclerosis Unit, of the Internal Medicine Service of University Hospital Reina Sofia.
Wenceslao Moreda, chemist specialized in olive oil, develops his research at the Instituto de la Grasa in Seville.

Biography: Jaime León is the correspondent in India for the Spanish journal ABC. During the last four years he has covered the Nargis cyclone in Myanmar, the Mumbay attacks in 2008 and the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, among others. Before that, he had lived for two years in Beijing, where he enjoyed walking around the hutongs. He is a journalist and a photographer.

Workshop: Art and recycling

Synopsis: The Basurama workshop attempts to fore fill a set of different objectives. First off, we discover, evaluate and re-use the local trash in a creative manner. Additionally, we ask to look past the obvious, and look at a city through a different more complex glance. As a collective we then proceed to reflect on the environment of the 21st century and thus brainstorm alternative solutions or paths we can take to improve our world. In this way we aim to intervene in public spaces, claiming it as the stage of life and art. One of the main goals of Basurama is to be able to relate the different problems of contemporary culture in all kinds of different cities, whether municipal, environmental, social etc. They are reflected in their trash.
Biography: Basurama is a collective dedicated to investigation and cultural management since 2001, their main focus has been the study and action of production processes, the generation of waste that this implies, and the creative processes this contemporary situation raises. A proposition has been made to find garbage in unlikely places and study it in all formats. The aim is to study the mass production of trash both real and virtual, and to bring new visions to act as generators for thought and attitude to the consumer culture. Furthermore, the collective intends questions on how to exploit our resources but also how we think, work and perceive reality. to detect the loopholes within these processes of generation and consumption that not only raise questions about how to exploit our resources, but also on how we think, work, to perceive reality.

Traditional craftwork exhibition. It questions the diffuse frontier between traditions and arts, the thick barriers between disciplines and trends. The visitor will enjoy a selection of pieces from each Spanish community and from different handicraft offices from Spain, a representation of traditional craft collectives and young values that outstand for their creativity, design and innovation.

“The elusive good” has been selected by Peru for the Academy awards in the category of best foreign film for 2002. The film has been nominated for the GOYA and ARIEL awards for 2002.

Society and his family are moving to a different beat; they did not wait for him and have no space for him now. Santiago will come to realize that things are not as he had hoped.

Synopsis: “No se lo digas a nadie” is the first Peruvian film to incorporate homosexuality as one of its main themes. The film tells the story of a young homosexual, Joaquin Camino, who belongs to the higher social class of Lima, and is confronted with the prejudice of his own parents and exclusion from a homophobic society, which claims to be conservative but in reality is hypocritical. The film shows a series of events that occur to Joaquin from his adolescent years till his adulthood.

“Mancora” was chosen as the official selection of Sundance 2008 film festival.
