Susana Fortes presenta su libro Esperando a Robert Capa

ICNY welcomes the writer Susana Fortes, who will present her latest book, Esperando a Robert Capa (Waiting for Robert Capa), recently published in English by Harper Collins. The novel is based in the love story and professional relationship between the young Gerta Taro and the famous photographer Robert Capa since they met in Paris in 1935 until she died in the Spanish Civil war in 1937. Love, war and photography marked their lives. They were young, antifascist, good-looking and nonconformist. They had everything in life and they put everything at risk. They created their own legend and remained faithful to it until the last consequences. Film rights to the novel have been purchased by director Michael Mann, who will soon adapt the story to the silver screen.

Susana Fortes (Pontevedra, 1959) es licenciada en Geografía e Historia por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela y en Historia de América por la Universidad de Barcelona. Recientemente ha estado en Estados Unidos compaginando la docencia de lengua castellana en el estado de Luisiana con conferencias universitarias en la Universidad Interestatal de San Francisco. En la actualidad reside en Valencia e imparte clases en un instituto. Con su primera novela, Querido Corto Maltés, ganó en 1994 el Premio Nuevos Narradores. En 2001 fue finalista del Premio Primavera, convocado por la editorial Espasa Calpe, con la novela Fronteras de arena. Además ha publicado Las cenizas de la Bounty (Espasa Calpe, 1998), Tiernos y traidores (Seix Barral, 1999) y el cuaderno de cine Adiós, muñeca (Espasa Calpe, 2002). Con El amante albanés fue finalista del Premio Planeta 2003. Hasta la fecha, sus novelas han sido traducidas al inglés, alemán, francés, holandés, italiano, noruego, portugués (Portugal y Brasil), chino (Simplificado y Tradicional), griego, turco, polaco, húngaro, hebreo, coreano y ruso. Colabora habitualmente en el diario El País, así como en revistas de cine y literatura.

Su novela El azar de Laura Ulloa (Planeta, 2006), ganó el Premio de la Crítica y ha sido traducida a varios idiomas. Quattrocento (Planeta, 2007) y su última novela Esperando a Robert Capa (Planeta, 2009), ganadora del Premio Fernando Lara 2009, han sido traducidas a 12 idiomas y son best-sellers en muchos países.

Los derechos cinematográficos de Esperando a Robert Capa han sido vendidos a Forward Pass (productora de Michael Mann) y Columbia Pictures. Jez Butterworth está escribiendo el guión.

BIOGRAPHY
Susana Fortes (Pontevedra, Spain, 1959) graduated in Geography and History at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, and in American History from the Universidad de Barcelona. She has recently spent time in the USA, combining teaching Spanish in Louisiana and participating in university conferences at the Universidad Interestatal de San Francisco. She currently teaches at a secondary school in Valencia. With her first novel, Querido Corto Maltés (Dear Corto Maltés), she won the 1994 Premio Nuevos Narradores. In 2001 she was shortlisted in the Premio Primavera awarded by Espasa for her novel, Fronteras de arena (Borders of Sand). She has also published Las cenizas de la Bounty (Ashes of the Bounty; Espasa, 1998), Tiernos y traidores (Tender Traitors; Seix Barral, 1999) and the screenplay Adiós, muñeca (Ciao, Doll; Espasa, 2002). With her novel El amante albanés (The Albanian Affairs) she was short-listed for the Premio Planeta 2003. Her novels have been translated into English, Dutch, French, Norwegian, Greek, German, Italian, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil), Chinese (Simplified and Complex) Polish, Hungarian, Croatian, Turkish, Hebrew, Russian and Korean. Susana is a regular contributor to the newspaper El País, as well as various cinema and literature magazines.

Her novel El azar de Laura Ulloa (The Fate of Laura Ulloa), Planeta 2006, won the Premio de la Crítica and has been translated into several languages. Quattroccento (Planeta, October 2007) and her last novel Waiting for Robert Capa (Planeta, 2009), winner of the Premio Fernando Lara 2009, have been translated into 12 languages and are best-seller in many countries.

Film rights of Waiting for Robert Capa have been sold to Forward Pass (Michael Mann's production company) and Columbia Pictures. The screenplay is written by Jez Butterworth.
