Laura is a contemporary college professor who studies the famous Cuban pimp Alberto Yarini and Ponce de Leon, shot dead by their French rivals who controlled the business of prostitution in Havana of the early twentieth century. Interested in proving the validity of the legendary character, laura soon finds herself entering one of the more complex reality of today's Havana: the world of prostitution, pimps and drug traffickers. In addition to being on this academic search, Laura becomes enmeshed in a very real rivalry for her affection by two men, Alberto and Rosendo. At once an exploration of prostitution then and now, and a commentary on love and sex in contemporary Cuba, “Fallen gods” was Cuba's official Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film in 2008.

An adaptation of a play by the same name, Lester Hamlet's emotional drama "Old house" is an honest and compelling tale about the trials of family. After having lived in Barcelona for 14 years, architect Esteban returns home to Cuba to be with his family as his father lay dying. Despite the many years that have passed, he finds that the only thing that has changed is himself—the people, expectations, anti-gay prejudices, and memories also await, untouched by time, until he is forced to face them. Hamlet's finely observed, moving, and critically-acclaimed film is an excellent screen adaptation of a great work of Cuban theatre. (+)
