Agenda Cultural Julio 2012 - Cultural Agenda July 2012

July is influenced by the tribute that Instituto Cervantes of New Delhi, in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico, will pay to the recently gone Cervantes prize, Carlos Fuentes. In his memory we will screen a film and documentary series in which he is the main protagonist; as a writer, as one of his books was brought to the big screen (Old Gringo), as a scriptwriter in a western film with Gabriel García Márquez (Time to die), and even as a narrator of a documentary series about the history of Mexico (The soul of Mexico). This film series will be complemented with a conference about the life and work of this great writer of the 20th Century.

To our collection of exhibitions we will add to the newly inaugurated exhibition of Mario de Miranda’s cartoons and Greguerías by Gómez de la Serna, an exciting exhibition of photographs taken by the journalist and photographer Jaime León who, with the title of “The color of Buddhism”, captures the daily life of Buddhist monks.

Given the exceptional success of the cooking course of the Basque Country, we have opened two new editions for the weekend 7th and 8th of July, and 21st and 22nd of July, so everyone can get a chance to learn to cook the great meals of the Basque gastronomy. In relation to this Spanish region we will screen 11 short films on Sunday 1st.

The Instituto Cervantes and the Embassy of Spain are bringing to Delhi a series of amusing cartoons about Spain by Mario Miranda and Greguerías by Ramón Gómez de la Serna.

Mario Miranda was an Indian cartoonist based in Loutolim in the Indian state of Goa. Miranda had been a regular with The Times of India and other newspapers in Mumbai, including The Economic Times, though he got his popularity with his works published in The Illustrated Weekly of India.

Ramón Gómez de la Serna is a genius who knew how to describe, with the right tools, a new world, influenced by the European vanguards and fractured by the imminent Spanish Civil War. In the context of a fragmented country, his cartoons are like lightning of intelligence, witty images that throw light to the most contradictory sides of the modern world he had to live. The drawings accompanying his work share the same freshness, lucidity and causticity.

CURSOS Y TALLERES - COURSES AND WORKSHOPS

Sábado 7 y domingo 8 de julio/ Saturday 7th and 8th July

Sábado 21 y domingo 22 de julio/ Saturday 21st and 22nd July

Curso de cocina española: País Vasco (6 hr.)

Learn to cook typical food from the Basque Country, one of the most important cooking traditions in the north of Spain. The quantity and quality of the meals make this one of the best regions to taste Spanish food, with delicious recipes used mixing the typical food from the north. Basque cuisine is an important part of Basque culture. According to the chef Ferran Adrià, San Sebastián "in terms of the average quality of the food, in terms of what you can get at any place you happen to walk into, maybe it is - probably it is, yes - the best in the world." The most popular dishes there are the seafood, fish (for example Marmitako) and the "Pintxos", bar finger food. Basque food is one of the reasons for tourism to the Basque Country, especially the pintxos. A popular way to socialize is "ir de pintxos" or txikiteo, a Basque version of a pub crawl, albeit generally more civilized.
