Edinburgh College of Art y el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Glasgow albergarán una retrospectiva de cinco días que incluye proyecciones de clásicos del catálogo, charlas, mesas redondas, masterclasses y otras actividades. Algunos de los directores más importantes asociados a esa “generación Kimuak” visitarán Escocia y serán parte de este homenaje, nombres de la talla de Asier Altuna o Isabel Herguera, el propio Txema Muñoz y voces nuevas del cine de Euskadi como Maider Fernández Iriarte. Miren Manias experta en cine vasco de University of Edinburgh también será parte de las actividades que configuran este homenaje a Kimuak.
La retrospectiva está organizada por Cinemaattic, que desde hace casi diez años se dedica a promover cine independiente español e iberoamericano en Escocia. Alberto Valverde, programador de Cinemaattic apuntó “El programa Kimuak es un claro ejemplo de respeto por el artista, de política pública bien invertida en cultura y como resultado una nueva ola de realizadores de Euskadi que arrasa en los Premios Goya y a nivel internacional. No es casualidad, es fruto de un compromiso’”.
“Kimuak: 20 Años de cortometraje vasco” propone una agenda plagada de actividades, entre las que destacan las masterclasses que Asier Altuna e Isabel Herguera darán en el Edinburgh College of Art o el homenaje ‘Making Short Film Great Again’ en el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Glasgow. Asier Altunatendrá su propio homenaje en una noche especial en la que se repasará su trayectoria, desde su primer cortometraje “Txotx” hasta su último largometraje“Amama”.
Entre las obras rescatadas en este homenaje están 7:35 de la mañana (Nacho Vigalondo); Traumatologia (Daniel Sanchez Arevalo); Txotx (Asier Altuna and Telmo Esnal); Deus et Machina (Koldo Almandoz); Minerita (Raúl de la Fuente); Amor de madre (Koldo Serra and Gorka Vázquez); Éramos Pocos (Borja Cobeaga), Sintonia (Jose Mari Goenaga);Topeka (Asier Altuna); El tren de la bruja (Koldo Serra)... Y otros más de veinte clásicos del programa Kimuak forman parte de la retrospectiva.
Cinemaattic es una organización dedicada a la promoción del cine independiente español y latinoamericano en Escocia. Actualmente en Edimburgo, Glasgow, y abriendo puertas en UK Londres y Manchester donde una vez al mes los mejores.

Scotland to celebrate the best cinema from the Basque Country

23MAY18 – MADRID.- Edinburgh and Glasgow will see a retrospective into films from Basque Country on May 24-31. The festival organised by Cinemaattic takes over some of Scotland's most important venues to celebrate classic and modern cinema from Basque Country. CCA Glasgow, Summerhall and Edinburgh College of Art host a five-day festival with screenings, talks, masterclasses and special events celebrating Basque cinema.

SHORT MATTERS - Back in the nineties using the experience of UniFrance and the New Zealand Film Commission the Basque Government decided to incorporate into their cultural agenda the production and distribution of short films as a core area of support and interest. As a result, the public agency Kimuak (‘Sprout’ in Basque) became the major driving force behind a whole new wave of Basque filmmakers.
Thanks to the ongoing collaboration between Edinburgh-based collective CinemaAttic and Kimuak, as well as Basque Film Archive – Scotland and Basque Country have been connected every year since 2011. Now, to mark the 20th Anniversary of Kimuak, a constellation of some of the most prominent Basque filmmakers are to visit Scotland.
Amongst the filmmakers attending are the director of Amama (2015) Asier Altuna and a world-renowned animator Isabel Herguera. In collaboration with Edinburgh College of Art they will both share their first-hand experiences with students and professionals. Txema Muñoz, the director of the Kimuak program and one of the most well-respected professionals in the short film industry in Europe, is coming to Scotland as well.
Amongst the highlights are the screening of Amama at Summerhall, described by Variety as ‘Intriguing, beautiful, powerful and highly symbolic’. Director Asier Altuna will attend a special night preceded by some of Altuna’s early short films and a showcase of Basque traditional dance and singing.
WOMEN AND THE MATRIARCHAL MYTH - Given that women in Basque Country have traditionally played a strong role, being the centre of decision-making in the family, Cinemaattic seeks to explore the established matriarchal view of Basque society by presenting a special selection of films and inviting a pair of strong feminist artists. They were both recently labelled by Variety magazine among the 10 Spanish Women on the verge of breaking out in the film biz , world-acclaimed Animator Isabel Herguera and emerging film punk Maider Fernandez Iriarte visit Scotland to talk about the myth and the truth of the Basque matriarchy.
Cinemaattic’s artistic coordinator Alberto Valverde said: ‘Kimuak is a pioneer initiative not just in Spain but in Europe. We think the Basque case could be extremely useful for Scottish filmmakers and Scotland’s film organisations, so we have carefully organised a range of talks and learning events to understand the Basque case better and of course, on top of that, a range of excellent screenings to showcase Kimuak’s award-winning short films.’
The programme includes retrospectives of cult and rare classics, contemporary award-winning films, plus Industry events, talks and learning opportunities.
CinemaAttic specialises in pop-up film screenings, underground events and retrospectives on Spanish & Latin-American Cinema. CinemaAttic film nights rely heavily on social value, chitchat networking and people coming together for more than just a film screening.
This retrospective is organised by CinemaAttic with the support of Film Hub Scotland, Etxepare Basque Institute and is proudly supported by Acción Cultural Española through the PICE's Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE), in the framework of the Mobility grants.
