High profile Spanish Historian Alejandro Quiroga will speak on nationalism and football at 12.30 on Thursday 7 June, at Newcastle University, in a talk entitled ‘Fury, underachievement and success. Narratives of Spanish Football’ as part of this years ¡VAMOS! Festival.

Just a day before the European Championship starts he will share his most recent research on Spanish nationalism and football in this talk, exploring nationalism and racial and ethnic conflicts within football - a passion of millions of people all over the world.

Dr. Alejandro Quiroga is a specialist in contemporary Spanish history and politics, teaching Twentieth-century European history at Newcastle University, but now based in Spain three years to study this topic.

The FREE talks programme takes place at the Daysh Building, Newcastle University 12.30-2pm on Thursdays during the festival.

Other sports inspired talks include ‘Olympics in the land of mañana: Mexico 68’ by Claire Brewster on Thursday 21st June.

The rest of the talks series, which is supported by Newcastle University include ‘Material democracy: water and politics in Latin America’ by Professor Esteban Castro on Thursday 14th June, ‘Dancing with the Devils at the Oruro Carnival (Bolivia)’ by Ximena Cordova on Thursday 28th June, ‘Language, identity and symbolic power in the Bolivia of Evo Morales’ by Professor Rosaleen Howard on Thursday 5th July and ‘(Hi)stories from the Andean Charango, talk and performance by Julio Mendivil’ on Thursday 12th July.

The Festival also includes a season of Brazilian Feature Films inspired by football including the UK PREMIERE of a big Brazilian film release about Rio’s football legend Heleno staring leading Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro, screening at the Star and Shadow Cinema at Sunday 24 June, and the film Linha de Passe on 20 June, based on a family’s life in Sao Paulo and how two of the sons dream of using their football skills to escape from poverty.

¡VAMOS! Festival celebrates Latin and Lusophone cultures, it's 7th edition takes place throughout North East England from 1st June to 15th July 2012, with 6 weeks of vibrant and varied events.

¡VAMOS! Festival has been granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme, awarded to innovative and exceptional projects conveying the spirit of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Festival programme also features the UK premieres of visual art exhibitions and films, Latin American artists commissions as part of the celebration of the Cultural Olympiad, performances by leading Latin DJs and musicians, a large scale Tyne Carnival procession with the general public in the centre of Newcastle, talks, language cafes and workshops.

!VAMOS! Festival has been granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme. The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Inspire programme is run by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. It is an opportunity for everyone to be a part of the London 2012 Games – a broad participation programme spanning sport participation, education, sustainability, volunteering, and business opportunities & culture. New opportunities are being created to inspire young people and encourage the whole of the UK to join in. The Inspire programme has awarded over 1,400 different projects the Inspire mark.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are delivered by two key organisations – the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). LOCOG is responsible for staging a memorable Games in 2012.
