miércoles 22 de octubre de 2014, 11:21h

What: ‘On Musical Simplicity: A conversation with Peter Phillips about the Music of Tomás Luis de Victoria’

When. Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Where: Instituto Cervantes New York

In preparation for The Tallis Scholars’ performance of Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Requiem at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin on April 2nd, at 8.00 pm, musicologist Antoni Pizà will engage in a lively discussion with conductor Peter Phillips covering issues of historical performance, history, politics, and the arts in Counter-Reformation Spain.

The intensely spiritual, passionate music of the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria has moved generations of listeners. This year the world commemorates the 400th anniversary of Victoria’s death, a composer whose crowning achievement was the monumental Requiem, one of the many topics that Antoni Piza and Peter Philips will embrace during their conversation.

About the speakers

Peter Phillips has made an impressive if unusual reputation for himself in dedicating his life's work to the research and performance of Renaissance polyphony. He founded the Tallis Scholars in 1973, with whom he has now appeared in over 1600 concerts and made over 50 albums, encouraging interest in polyphony all over the world. As a result of his work, through concerts, recordings, magazine awards, publishing editions of the music and writing articles, Renaissance music has come to be accepted for the first time as part of the mainstream classical repertoire.
