Tuesday, June 5, 6:00 pm - Instituto Cervantes - 31 W. Ohio Street - Chicago, IL 60654 (312) 335-1996 - Free and open to the public. - This event celebrates the opening of the photography exhibit: Maremágnum by Jordi Socías
Maremágnum: A Photojournalism Exhibit by Jordi Socías is a journey through the last four decades. A forefather of contemporary Spanish photography, Jordi Socías (Barcelona, 1945) is self-taught and his passion, initiative and drive are further illustrated by his co-founding of the API news agency (Agencia Popular Informativa) which distributed news that the Franco regime censored. This exhibit, never before seen in Chicago, is composed of photographs from key moments in recent Spanish history, images of daily life in cities around the world, and portraits of important figures of Spanish and world culture.
The exhibition features images of upheaval and metamorphosis in post-Franco Spain of the 1970s and 80s, including the attempted coup on February 23, 1981. Photographs give us glimpses of everyday life in cities such as Santiago de Cuba, Beijing, Barcelona and London. Mr. Socías' portraits of cultural figures include Salvador Dalí, Jorge Luis Borges, Graham Greene, John Le Carre, Pedro Almodóvar, Francis Ford Coppola, Chucho Valdes and Penelope Cruz.
For the event on Tuesday, June 5 at 6pm, Jordi Socías will be joined by Steve Schapiro, photographer, and Paul Berlanga, Co-director of Stephen Daiter Gallery, for a discussion about their work and experiences.
Mr. Schapiro's images have graced the covers of Vanity Fair, Time, Life, and Paris Match.
Active in the Civil Rights movement in the1960s, Schapiro documented marches and protests, and was called to Memphis by Life magazine after the assignation of Martin Luther King, Jr. His are iconic images of that tragic event.
The Apollo theater, Haight-Ashbury and the Presidential campaign of Robert Kennedy are other of his subjects.
Since the 1970s Schapiro has documented the making of over 200 films including The Godfather, Taxi Driver, The Way We Were and Risky Business. He has photographed Barbra Streisand, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Samuel Beckett, Muhammad Ali, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Robert Redford, and Cher.
We are thrilled to have Paul Berlanga as moderator of the evening's discussion. Mr. Berlanga is Co-director and Exhibit Curator at Stephen Daiter Gallery, which offers American and European photography from the 20th century, especially avant garde, experimental, documentary and photojournalism.
