English translation:

Favelas: a perspective from the distance

I review the notes from my travels from the perspective of being comfortable in my apartment and from a distance. Clearly I see that is not me who chooses the destination, rather, I am "dragged" to it and I can't and don't want to avoid it.

These 'adventures' in which sometimes I do not know quite well where I'm going, or what I will find. Motivated by a simple thought: "waiting and doing the same thing that makes you unhappy does not solve a thing". That, coupled with the need to leave the comfort zone, that one everyone speaks of but few leaves, takes me to live "unconventional" way, not to follow the inertia of the multitude. I listen to my instincts, they "scream" that part of me. Those soul screams I then transcribe in these chronicles, and transformed into appeased whispers. I calm the insatiable thirst for life in the only way that I can, losing the fear of fear ... living.

The eight days I've spent in Rio de Janeiro, with my destiny 'Río de Ilusión', have shown me that the human being ability to overcome is infinite, as you have seen in my reports. Day by day, feelings were on a roller coaster alongside the participants of the Paralympics, my body was traveling hours by car due to heavy traffic in the capital and meanwhile watching its wide roads and avenues, its endless kilometers of coastline, one beach after another; the center of the city in which poverty and buildings of great architectural value as the Teatro Municipal with eclectic style live together , like mine, defies the laws of the world saying, "This is Río de Janeiro, huge city where nothing is predetermined, in which cultures coexist, the same as trends, wealth and poverty... with a characteristic difference from the rest of the world, from the favelas, the poor look down to the rich".

Favelas, as told in the chronicle of my first visit (you can read it translated into English here and here), fill the hills that embrace Río, are part of its history, its cultural heritage, from the heights they demand their identity, irremovable, independent and mysterious. From the mountain, poverty contemplates the wealth, not wishing to attain it even for a moment, proud of itself ... That's the word that describes the eyes of the people which I came across in my nightly walks in the Favelas: pride.

My "destination" on this trip was not Río de Janeiro, Rio “dragged me” to its colors, vegetation, smells, street music, gastronomy ... The sunset and sunrise in that city are a feast of senses that traps and irresistibly excites, makes you fall in love with it, surprises you, seduces you ... fascinates you. An irrepressible fascination that permeates you with the irrepressible need to climb the hills where I thought I saw bright stars embedded in the mountains; that is the night vision of the favelas, embedded stars, as if in a shower of shooting stars these have not disappeared at entering our atmosphere, but have looked for shelter in the hills of Rio. I think that's the vision that bewitches the traveler ... Stars in the mountains.

Yes, I have fallen in love with Rio and yes, I am aware of the risk entailed my night walks but I'm even more aware of that the sadness of “not feeling" is more dangerous than travelling solo... So night after night, ended my volunteer work of these Paralympics, I lived and explored the secrets from Rio, those born in the favelas, those screaming from inside, screams transcribed and turned into whispers ...

A hug
