A GUN IN EACH HAND (UNA PISTOLA EN CADA MANO)- OPENING NIGHT

CESC GAY

Spain / 2012 / 97 min / Spanish with English subtitles

With Ricardo Darín, Luis Tosar, Javier Cámara, Eduardo Noriega, Leonor Watling, Candela Peña, Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, Eduard Fernández, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Jordi Mollà, Alberto San Juan, Clara Segura

Eight men in their forties are caught up in everyday situations revealing their main conflict: a masculine identity crisis. They all share feelings of bewilderment, and their behavior forms a mosaic of emotions men usually don’t reveal.

J. is depressed and he is the perfect victim for psychoanalysis. E. has lost everything and now lives with his mother and his cat. Two years later, S. makes an attempt to win his ex-wife back. With the help of drugs, G. is trying to understand why his wife is having an affair. And the rest of his friends are doing their best with similar catastrophes…

Ordinary men in extraordinary situations are the protagonists of a comic and merciless portrait of manhood today.

SIX POINTS ABOUT EMMA (SEIS PUNTOS SOBRE EMMA)

ROBERTO PÉREZ TOLEDO

Spain / 2012 / 90 min / Spanish with English subtitles

With Verónica Echegui, Álex García, Fernando Tielve

Emma is blind but she believes she can see everything very clearly; she wants to become a mother. She yearns it obsessively. After finding out her boyfriend is not able to get her pregnant she breaks up with him and goes on a search for the perfect sperm, without falling in love or getting emotionally involved. Sounds simple enough but soon she will find out that her blindness affects more than just her sight.

Wednesday, October 9 - 6:50 pm

MAP (MAPA)

ELIAS LEÓN SIMINIANI

Spain / 2012 / 85 min / Spanish with English subtitles

A “romantic documentary,” as described by Siminiani, Map follow as young Spanish director as he gets fired from his job at a broadcasting company. Recovering his dream to make movies, he travels to India in “search” of his first feature film, only to discover that his real search isn’t in India but back home: actually, he was escaping… Back in Madrid, however, things don’t exactly work out as expected…

Shot in first person, this road movie with interior dialogue is a hybrid between personal fiction, documentary, and travelogue that redefines the autobiographical documentary genre. Eccentric and fun at the same time, Map is wonderful reflection on the artist’s disoriented existence and the creative process created by one of the best respected independent filmmakers working today.

Goya Awards® - Best Documentary Nomination; Sevilla Film Festival - Best European Documentary; International Film Festival of Uruguay - Best Film New Filmmakers, FIPRESI Special Mention; Rome Independent Film Festival - Best International Documentary.

Wednesday, October 16 - 6:55 pm

THE WILD ONES (ELS NENS SALVATGES)

PATRICIA FERREIRA

With Marina Comas, Àlex Monner, Albert Baró

A surprising portrayal of the youth in Spain, The Wild Ones is Patricia Ferreira’s -one of the greatest filmmakers working in Spain today- best work to date.

Most parents love and care for their children, but also tend to forget how difficult the transition from childhood to adulthood can be. Alex, Gabi, and Oki are three teenagers making their way through life in the city. Like any other teenagers, they like to spend their time pushing the limits that their parents and society enforce on them; drinking, fighting and painting graffiti … but nothing could lead us to believe the terrible consequences that these kids’ actions could end up having on those around them…

CASTING

JORGE NARANJO

Spain, Germany / 2012 / 90 min / Spanish with English Subtitles

With Javier López, Esther Rivas, Ken Appledorn, Nay Díaz, Ruth Armas, Marta Poveda, Beatriz Arjona, Dani Pérez Prada, Carmen Mayordomo.

A fresh take on the ‘Boy Meets Girl’ plot, Casting follows a young actor Javi, who was crashed at his first casting and the last thing he wants is to go to another one. But he cannot miss this one. His girlfriend and the rent demand it. There is no other option. What he doesn’t know is that there he will meet Esther, an actress with whom he will spend several hours, going through an emotional journey full of flirting, feelings, and disappointments that will help him find himself…Even if he doesn’t want to…Even if that means changing his whole life.

With incredible interpretations by an impressive ensemble cast that collectively took home the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards at the Malaga Film Festival, Casting introduces audience to the new faces of Spanish cinema. The film also counts with cameo appearances by the director Daniel Sánchez-Arévalo, and actors Natalia Mateo and Raúl Arévalo, who with their presence support risky initiatives such as this one. Shot with a budget of only 20,000 euros, Casting is the best example of a new low budget filmmaking style taking place in Spain by the young generation of directors.

Malaga Film Festival - Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress shared among the ensemble cast
