March 16-30 SERIES: Ricardo Darín: ¿El Mejor Actor De La Última Década?/Ricardo Darín: Best Actor Of The Past Decade?

One of the most charismatic and talented performers to emerge out of Latin America in the last decade, Ricardo Darín has come to embody, for many spectators in his native Argentina, as well as in Spain and elsewhere in the Spanish-speaking world, the travails and aspirations of Buenos Aires' middle class in face of the country's worst economic crisis. Whether playing a sleazy con man, a stressed-out restaurateur weighed down by debt, a political activist, a tormented father, or a righteous police investigator, Darín brings to his roles a dual measure of urgency and vulnerability and a generosity of spirit which have made him one of Latin America's most beloved actors. Indeed, his success is nothing short of remarkable, considering that Mr. Darín was already in his early forties by the time his dazzling performance in Nine Queens (2000) made him an international star. Working with established directors such as Marcelo Piñeyro, or newcomers like Fabián Bielinsky or Lucía Puenzo, Darín has been instrumental to the renewed international visibility of Argentine cinema in the past ten years.

Marzo/March 16  630pm Wednesday

Nueve Reinas/Nine Queens (Fabián Bielinsky, 2000, Argentina, 115m)

Bielinsky's acclaimed debut feature, with its twisting plot turns and perverse delight in exploring the lives of swindlers and con artists, follows in the best tradition of Hitchcock's and Mamet's oeuvres. Two grifters ―the older, experienced Marcos (Ricardo Darín) and the younger, innocent-looking Juan (Gastón Pauls)― team up to pull off a complex heist job involving a forged set of rare stamps. As the stakes rise, so does the suspense, as it increasingly becomes unclear ―to the audience, as well as to the characters― just who is conning whom.

Marzo/March 19  12pm Saturday

El Hijo De La Novia/The Son Of The Bride (Juan José Campanella, Argentina/España, 2001, 123m)

Darín shines in this engaging comedy set among the middle classes of Buenos Aires on the eve of Argentina's economic meltdown. Rafael Belvedere (Darín), who manages an Italian restaurant named after his mother Norma (the great actress Norma Aleandro), is undergoing a mid-life crisis. His relationship with his younger girlfriend is on the skids, he no longer finds joy in the restaurant and wants to sell it in order to alleviate his debts, and his mother has fallen prey to Alzheimer's disease. Stressed out by his circumstances, Rafael suffers a heart attack. During his slow recovery, he decides to get his life back on track, helping his father (veteran actor Hector Alterio) keep a promise he once made to his mother of eventually marrying her in church, in spite of the opposition of the local priest.

Marzo/March 23  630pm Wednesday

Darín gives one of his finest, most nuanced performances as Espinoza, a taxidermist who fantasizes about pulling off the perfect crime. The opportunity to make this fantasy come true presents itself during a hunting trip; after accidentally killing a man who turns out to be a real criminal, Espinoza takes up his scheme: the heist of an armored truck carrying casino profits. Inexorably drawn into a web of betrayals and deceit, Espinoza finds himself at the mercy of his own epilepsy, with each recurring fit and subsequent blackout placing his life in grave danger. Bielinsky's second and final feature is a leisurely paced, yet engrossing thriller which invests the best neo-noir tradition with existentialist overtones and an appropriate atmosphere of dread.

Marzo/March 26  12pm Saturday

Lucía Puenzo, the daughter of Academy-award winner Luís Puenzo (The Official Story), won the prestigious Critic's Week Grand Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival with this touching film, her first feature. Alex (Inés Efrón), a restless tomboy born with both sexual organs, has reached adolescence under the wing of her protective parents and now faces some stark choices: to continue taking the  medications which boost her feminine appearance, to drop them and allow nature to take its course, or to undergo surgery. Darín gives one of his most sensitive performances as Alex's father, a marine biologist who struggles to help his daughter find the right path.

Marzo/March 30  630pm Wednesday

El Secreto De Sus Ojos/The Secret In Their Eyes  (Juan José Campanella, Argentina/España, 2009, 129m)

Benjamín, a middle-aged, retired federal agent, has decided to write a novel about an unsolved murder case he was assigned to decades ago, in the early 1970s. In order to reacquaint himself with the case, he appears one day at the office of his former boss, Judge Irene Menéndez Hastings (Soledad Villamil), and requests her advice. With each successive draft, Benjamín's novel awakens forgotten memories of the case and repressed feelings between the couple, slowly drawing the spectator into a vortex of intrigue, danger and thwarted love. Campanella's deft screenplay (adapted from a novel by Eduardo Sacheri) interweaves present and past, suspense and romance, and the generic devices of film noir with a melancholic look back at Argentina's harrowing history of political violence and fascist undercurrents. Darín's towering performance as Benjamín lends depth and resonance to Campanella's gripping thriller, winner of the 2010 Oscar to the Best Foreign Film, and the second highest grossing movie in the history of Argentine cinema.
