Architecture Exhibit  - Opening reception and lectura - Wednesday, March 30, 6:00 p.m. Free & open to the public

miércoles 22 de octubre de 2014, 11:21h

Distinguished speakers: Architects Fuentesanta Nieto & Enrique Sobejano. Instituto Cervantes – 31 W. Ohio St. Chicago, IL 60654

The exhibition “Young Architects of Spain: A Window to the Unknown” began with an open call to all young Spanish architects, both within and outside of Spain’s borders. From the more than 700 designs presented, 62 were selected in a process that was carried out by each one of the members of the international jury, made up of prestigious architects and architecture critics. The selected projects in this exhibition come from all over Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands, so that it truly represents the extraordinary quality of work by this group of young architects.

If you look for common traits in the designs of this generation, two might stand out in particular: the rigor of the construction of their buildings and their sensitivity to the surrounding environment, whether natural or cultural. Within these parameters, their buildings have been erected in various places, all with very different characteristics, and these environments have been improved for the people who inhabit and enjoy them, thanks to these young architects who have left their mark.

As part of the opening of YAS, the Instituto Cervantes will host a discussion with renowned Spanish         architects Fuentesanta Nieto & Enrique Sobejano. They will focus on their current projects and the challenges they face in designing and building. They will discuss how an idea develops into a large, complex project over time, rooted in continuous research on materials, structures, spaces, color, light, and the cultural environment.

Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano have degrees in architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid and the Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in New York. Partners of the studio Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, S.L., they also currently teach at the Universidad Europea de Madrid as well as the Universität der Künste in Berlin, and are recipients of the Aga Khan Award 2010 for the Madinat al Zahra Museum in Cordoba, Spain.

Also present at the opening will be Jesús Aparicio, curator of the exhibit, and Jesús Donaire, the architect responsible for the exhibit’s design.

This event is an important part of the second series of architecture and urbanism organized by the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago. Its goal is to establish a platform in Chicago for an open exchange of design ideas and interesting experiences within the world of architecture and urbanism. The series continues on April 20th at 6:00 pm, with Spanish architect Enric Ruiz-Geli, who has dedicated his professional career to designing exhibits and scenery, although he is also recognized for his work in digital architectural production. At the end of the spring series, on April 25th at 6:00 pm, the Instituto Cervantes will showcase the work of Spain’s Ensamble Studio through a conference presented by founding architect Antón García-Abril, who has been a guest professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, as well as at Cornell University and various others throughout the United States and Europe.
