miércoles 22 de octubre de 2014, 11:21h

EL ATLAS DE BORGES - Photography Exhibit - Opening reception: Tuesday, March 1, 6 pm - Instituto Cervantes Gallery – 31 W. Ohio St. - Chicago, IL 60654 - Free & open to the public

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of his death, the Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the City of Buenos Aires and the Jorge Luis Borges International Foundation, honors Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges with the photography exhibit “El Atlas de Borges”.  This exhibit consists of 130 photographs as well as texts that Borges wrote especially for his book, El Atlas, which was published two years before his death. The photos come from the private collection of his widow, María Kodama, and are complemented by audio and film clips. They portray a Borges much different from the author who gives lectures, showing instead a reflective and relaxed man, a smiling companion traveling with his wife in places like Geneva, Philadelphia, Istanbul, and Crete. The exhibit invites us to participate in Borges’ universe, through his way of seeing, interpreting, and living in the world that he traveled through and reflected on with simplicity in his writing.

The Instituto Cervantes is honored to have María Kodama, President of the Jorge Luis Borges International Foundation, present at the opening, as well as Hernán Lombardi, the Minister of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.

Mr. Lombardi notes, “In the prologue to the Atlas, Borges discusses the travel experience as one of infinite possibility and continuous discovery.” He quotes Borges, who said, "...With both happiness and amazement, María Kodama and I have shared the discovery of sounds, languages, sunsets, cities, gardens, and people—always different and unique."

Since 2008, this traveling exhibit has been seen by people around the world, but this will be its first time in the U.S. The relationship between Borges and the U.S. has always been close and intense, which is apparent by the numerous people who read his works in the English language.

The exhibit will run from March 1st to March 26th.
